
Ivan Vidaković
Ivan Vidaković is a Teaching Assistant and PhD student at the University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, Faculty of Law, specializing in the intersection of artificial intelligence and criminal procedure law, with a focus on the law of evidence and how AI technologies disrupt traditional tendencies in criminal proceedings. Besides the aforementioned doctoral research, he is interested in discussions on pre-trial detention frameworks, European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence, and technology integration into legal processes.
From April 1 to May 31, 2024, Ivan participated in a two-month visiting research stay at the Digital Justice Center (DJC) of the University of Wroclaw. Focused on advancing his doctoral research on Artificial Intelligence and the Law of Evidence in Criminal Procedure, he underworked under the guidance of Prof. Karolina Kremens and in collaboration with the entire DJC team. This stay provided a supportive and dynamic academic environment, fostering significant progress in her research while enabling meaningful professional and personal growth.
During 2023 and 2024, Dr. Vidaković made contributions to academic conferences and scholarly publications. At RIDOC 2023 in Rijeka, he presented topic of Predictive Policing and Law Enforcement Authorities: A New European Union Perspective. At the ASCEA III Annual Scientific Conference in Budapest, he delivered presentation on Artificial Intelligence in Criminal Proceedings: Instigating Imbalances in Traditional Tendencies. Additionally, at an online roundtable hosted by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, he presented topic of Regulation of Artificial Intelligence in the European Union: Technological Challenges and Ethical Issues.
He authored an article titled The Use of Predictive Artificial Intelligence Systems by Law Enforcement Bodies – A European Union Perspective, published in Hrvatski ljetopis za kaznene znanosti i praksu (Vol. 32, No. 1). Additionally, he co-authored the article Technology-Driven Changes in Criminal Procedure: Balancing Procedural Efficiency and the Right to Defense with Assoc. Prof. Sunčana Roksandić and Assoc. Prof. Ante Novokmet, featured in Modernizacija pravosuđa (Vol. 82, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts). Furthermore, Dr. Vidaković collaborated with Assoc. Prof. Zvonimir Tomičić and Assoc. Prof. Ante Novokmet on the article Facial Recognition Technology in EU Criminal Justice – Human Rights Implications and Challenges,” published in the EU and Comparative Law Issues and Challenges Series (ECLIC) (Vol. 7, 2023).
At the same time, Ivan remains an enthusiastic chess player, finding inspiration in the game’s strategic depth and mental challenge, which he often incorporates into his academic pursuits.
