Our researchers visited Belgium and Luxembourg
If it’s May 2022, we are in Belgium and Luxembourg!
This month our DJC trio (Karolina Kremens, Wojciech Jasiński and Kaja Kowalczewska) were invited by prof. Vanessa Franssen for an extremely intensive (both, intellectually a physically) research stay at the University of Liège combined with visits to the heart of the European justice system – Luxembourg.
The University of Liège part:
- On May 16th we participated in the international research seminar “Criminal justice and digitalization”. The diversity of both opportunities and risks that new technologies give us was discussed on the basis of such case studies as the SkyECC affair (Prof. Frank Verbruggen), @ntidote Project (Dr. Mona Giacometti), FBI-Apple encryption dispute (Prof. Stanisław Tosza).
- On May 18th, Karolina Kremens and Wojciech Jasiński gave a lecture to master students on the Polish reform of criminal procedure in Poland, tellingly entitled “Polish Short Romance with Adversariality”.
The Luxembourg part:
- It is hard to conceal that one of the most exciting moments of our research stay was the trip to Luxembourg. Courtesy of Prof. Vanessa Franssen, we had the opportunity to visit the Court of Justice of the European Union premises and meet Koen Lenaerts – President of the CJEU, as well as attend a hearing in the trial (Portugal v Commission, case T-95/21).
- The second, equally interesting event of the day was a visit to the newly opened European Public Prosecutor’s Office headquarters and a discussion on, among other things, how the negotiations with Poland, which is one of the 5 EU Member States not participating in this enhanced cooperation, are going.
Once again, we were able to cultivate existing partnerships and plan new joint projects. We are not saying goodbye to our friends for long, as in the near future they will be cooperating with the Digital Justice Center – including on the occasion of the ICON•S 2022 conference which we are co-organizing. See you soon!
