Kamil Sobański concluded his six-month research stay at Tilburg University

With the end of July, Kamil Sobański concluded his six-month research stay at the Department of Criminal Law, based at Tilburg Law School at Tilburg University in the Netherlands.

Kamil divided his time between advancing his PhD research and presenting his findings, actively participating in the academic life of Tilburg. He attended courses on criminal law, as well as various conferences and seminars held across the Netherlands.

During his stay, Kamil focused on researching the impact of remote participation via video link in proceedings before the International Criminal Court, with particular attention to victims and how their interests are represented in this context. He drafted a research paper grounded in empirical findings, based on interviews with legal representatives of victims working at the ICC and court staff member.

Kamil was supervised by Prof. Elies van Sliedregt, an internationally renowned expert in international criminal law and ERC Advanced Grant awardee (Jointed Up Justice project), and Dr. Dorris de Vocht, a leading scholar on virtual justice in criminal proceedings and one of the founders of the Virtual Criminal Justice Network.

Kamil’s research stay was supported by a scholarship awarded under the NAWA Preludium Bis 4 Program (No. BPN/PRE/2024/1/00006/DEC/1). This stay contributed significantly to his PhD research, funded by the Polish National Science Centre, titled “Virtual Justice: Remote Proceedings before the International Criminal Court – Threat or Opportunity” (No. 2022/47/O/HS5/01229).
