The International Seminar “Virtual Justice in Europe

On May 14, 2025, legal scholars and practitioners gathered at the University of Wrocław for the international seminar “Virtual Justice in Europe”, co-hosted by the Digital Justice Center and the European Journal of Crime, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice.

Together, we explored critical questions shaping the future of digital criminal justice:

What does “presence” mean in an online courtroom?

Can witness credibility and fair trial rights be preserved remotely?

Is it time to rethink the structure of trials in the digital age?

🎙 A powerful keynote by Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas (University of Liverpool) challenged us to envision justice beyond the traditional courtroom.

🏆 We also proudly celebrated the Biannual Prize 2024 awarded to Jan-Jaap Oerlemans and Dave van Toor for their article on EncroChat & human rights.

The event accompanied the upcoming Special Issue of EJCCLCJ focused on virtual justice across Europe.

Thank you to all speakers and participants who made this an insightful and thought-provoking gathering! Christina Peristeridou, Lisa Flower, Emma Jaspaert, Paolo Belloni, Kamil Sobański, Sharon Okunrobo Perez, Wojciech Jasiński, Ashlee Beazely, Ante Novokmet, Ivan Vidaković, Ana Lucia Tavares Ferreira, Lorenzo Bernardini.
