Beam me up, Scotty! Effective participation to virtual criminal proceedings

We are excited to invite you to the next meeting of the Digital Justice Seminar Series. This time, Dr. Christina Peristeridou from Maastricht University and Virtual Criminal Justice Network will be our guest speaker.

The rise of video-links in criminal hearings has replaced physical presence with virtual participation, altering courtroom dynamics and challenging defence rights. In her research project, Dr. Peristeridou will study this shift to virtual presence through the lens of the right of effective participation. In her presentation, she will present the project and its challenges and explain how using a human-centred approach to the law could provide an evidence-based definition of the right to effective virtual participation.

Dr. Christina Peristeridou is a tenured Assistant Professor of Criminal Law at Maastricht University and a lawyer admitted to the Thessaloniki Bar since 2008. Specializing in comparative and European criminal procedure, her research has a current focus on virtual criminal justice, procedural justice theory, and mutual trust mechanisms as  the European Arrest Warrant. She has co-authored the book Comparative Perspectives of Criminal Procedure (Intersentia, 2024, with A. Klip). She co-founded the Virtual Criminal Justice Network and has led interdisciplinary projects on pre-trial detention and digitalization. She is co-founder of Female Empowerment Maastricht (FEM).
