New publication by Kamil Sobański
We’re glad to share Kamil Sobański’s article “Evolution of Remote Participation of the Accused and Victim in International Criminal Proceedings” is now published in the International Criminal Law Review, one of the leading journals on the topic.
The use of remote communication tools in international criminal proceedings, particularly at the International Criminal Court (ICC), has grown significantly. This paper analyzes the evolution of these technologies and their impact on the rights of the accused, highlighting differing justifications based on participants’ approaches. Additionally, it considers the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the adoption of these tools.

The article is one of the first explorations of virtual criminal justice in the context of international criminal proceedings and constitutes a preliminary result of a research project “Virtual Justice. Remote Proceedings before the International Criminal Court – Threat or Opportunity” funded by NCN National Science Centre (No. 2022/47/O/HS5/01229). Stay tuned for more Kamil’s publications in the future, including one already presented at conferences, discussing the necessity for the ICC to grant the accused the right to participate remotely in trials.
