Digital Justice Center organized a round table ‘Wrongful Deprivation of Liberty’
On March 22, 2023 Digital Justice Center together with Okręgowa Rada Adwokacka w Warszawie, Helsińska Fundacja Praw Człowieka and Stowarzyszenie im. Prof. Zbigniewa Hołdy organized a round table ‘Wrongful Deprivation of Liberty’. The event was hosted by the Warsaw Bar Association and gathered academics and practitioners – attorneys, judges, prosecutors.
The aim of the meeting was to exchange views on how cases of wrongful deprivation of liberty can be prevented and if they occur how they should be compensated. The round table’s discussion was divided into three parts. The first one was aiming at answering the question of how to effectively identify wrongful convictions, including the need to establish an independent institution to review possible distortions of justice. The second part of the discussion was focused on the desired amendments in the area of criminal law and procedure necessary to avoid wrongful deprivation of liberty. The last part of the meeting dealt with the issue of granting fair compensation. A member of the Digital Justice Center team Wojciech Jasiński together with Łukasz Chojniak – attorney at law in Warsaw and assistant professor at the University of Warsaw – made an introduction to discussion during the second part of the round table.
