Special Issue of the European Journal of Crime, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice is out now!

We’re thrilled to announce the publication of the Special Issue of the European Journal of Crime, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice (Vol. 33, No. 1–2) dedicated to Virtual Justice in Europe.

In the editorial opening this issue, Karolina Kremens and Christina Peristeridou set the stage for a much-needed conversation on how the shift from physical to virtual participation transforms criminal proceedings.

As they write, this change is not simply about relocating hearings to a digital space — it’s about rethinking what justice means when it is dispersed across screens, spaces, and experiences.

The editorial identifies four key themes shaping the debate:

🌀 the definition of virtual participation

💻 technological reliability and access to justice

👥 the human dimension of remote hearings

⚖️ the evolving nature of procedural rights

This Special Issue is part of a broader initiative to build the Virtual Criminal Justice Network, and continues the dialogue that began during our conference hosted by the Digital Justice Center in May 2025.

We couldn’t be more excited to share these ideas — and we invite you to read, reflect, and join the discussion.
