📢 From 7–9 May, Michalina Marcia and Karolina Kremens had the opportunity to participate in the conference “Profiling & Automated Decisions in Criminal Justice,” hosted by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg.
🎤 Michalina presented on the topic “Legal Safeguards Against AI-Induced Bias,” focusing on:
- The various types of bias that can emerge in AI systems used within the criminal justice domain and the risks associated with them,
- Possible solutions, including system design improvements and traceability mechanisms,
- Key legal challenges such as quality assessments of AI tools, review procedures, protection of defence rights, and the shaping of effective regulatory frameworks.
Her panel, chaired by Karolina, also included a very interesting presentation by Giulia Lasagni on the impact of automated technology on miscarriages of justice.
A sincere thank you to the organizers at the Max Planck Institute for hosting such a thought-provoking and timely event and to all participants for their valuable insights!
