23 January 2023 – dr Agnieszka Jab\u0142onowska – Automating compliance assessment of insurance contracts using AI<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Dr Agnieszka Jab\u0142onowska explored to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) can facilitate the assessment of insurance contracts in light of the applicable provisions of contract law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An existing AI system for the analysis of consumer contracts, developed as part of the CLAUDETTE project, provides the starting point for this investigation. The system was trained on a data set consisting of more than 100 online terms of service, which were analysed by legal experts and marked in XML. Harmonised rules on unfair terms, set out in the Council Directive 93\/13\/EEC on unfair terms in consumer contracts, provided the benchmark for the tagging choices. While this system was shown to be successful in the domain of online terms of services, it remains to be verified whether a similar performance can also be obtained in the insurance sector. In her presentation, our guest discussed the potential and limits of using the existing CLAUDETTE system in the insurance sector and contemplate its possible refinements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agnieszka Jab\u0142onowska is a post-doctoral researcher in the Vici project \u201cThese Shoes Don\u2019t Fit! \u2013 How can consumer interests be protected when consumer identities are increasingly diffuse?\u201d carried out at the Institute of Private Law. Prior to joining the Leiden University she held post-doctoral positions at the EUI and at the Institute of Law Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. She was also a fellow at the AI & Society Lab, Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin and a visiting researcher at several research centres, including the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, the Tilburg Institute for Private Law at Tilburg University, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg and the European Legal Studies Institute at Osnabr\u00fcck University.
Agnieszka\u2019s academic interests lie at the intersection of law and technology, with a focus on consumer protection. She is also interested in the connection between protecting weaker parties and fostering sustainability. Before starting in Leiden Agnieszka has been involved in national and international research projects focusing on online platforms and artificial intelligence. In her most recent work she combines doctrinal and theoretical approaches with insights from legal informatics<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
